Parsha Summary

We learned that Yitzchak and Rivka didn’t have children for many years and they prayed to Hashem. Rivka had twin boys.

We talked about twins. Some are identical, others fraternal.

We asked the students to share if they have twins in their family. I was able to have a parent bring in their twin babies for the class to see.

Esav was born red and hairy and Yaakov was born smooth. Esav loved to hunt and Yaakov loved to learn Torah. They were not identical!

We learned about the red lentil soup that Yaakov was cooking. Esav came in hungry and said, “Give me soup”. He didn’t say please. Yaakov said “I’ll give you soup if you sell me the bechora“.

Esav said, “I don’t need it, I want soup!”.

We learned about when it was coming time for Yitzchak to pass away, it was hard for him to see and he wanted to bless Esav who was the Bechor. He asked Esav to bring him food. Rivka heard that and told Yaakov to go and get the brachos. She gave him 2 goats to bring to Yitzchak. She put goatskin on him and gave him Esav’s coat. When he came into the room to see Yitzchak, Yitzchak felt his arms and felt that they were hairy. So he said, “The voice is the voice of Yaakov and the hands are the hands of Esav.” He gave Yaakov the brachos. When Esav came in and heard what happened, he got really angry and wanted to hurt him. Rivka told Yaakov to run to Lavan’s house in Charan.

Parsha Drawing Journal

Every week, we draw a picture of the parsha (I always did it before shabbos party after reviewing the parsha of the week) and send it home at the end of the Chumash. I love that the children get to tell the story of the parsha in their own words. It is remarkable to see how much their handwriting and drawing skills improve from the beginning to the end of the book.

Sensory

We played a texture matching game. I pasted swatches of different textures and fabrics on index cards in pairs. We were blindfolded and had to feel the different textures and match them up. We tied it in with Yitzchak feeling the fur on Yaakov's arms.
