This week we continued learning about Australia. We focused on places, people, food and language.

We learned about the Great Barrier Reef. The coral, anemones and the various fish and plants that live there.

We learned about Ayers Rock also knows as Uluru and saw photos of how it looks red at sunset.

We saw photos of the Sydney Opera House and recreated it.

We spoke about the Aboriginal Australian people. We talked about how they lived, farmed and their art. Here is a link to a page with information about the Indigenous Australians.

We cooked Australian meat pies and we made pavlova.

FOOD:

We made Australian Meat Pies. I adapted this recipe and made individual pies in ramekins. It was a big hit with the family and we are glad to have tried something new.

We also made pavlova using this recipe.

ART:

  • We created a really beautiful coral reef diorama  based off of this post and this one. The only supplies you need are an egg carton, tissue paper and pipe cleaners. We painted the egg carton blue and green. Then we created the coral using tissue paper and pipe cleaners. I printed fish from the second link and we colored and put it all together using toothpicks.

  • We did aboriginal art inspired dot painting using stencils from this page.

  • We made working origami boomerangs from this video.

  • Here is a tutorial on how to draw Ayers Rock - Uluru
