Story of Shavuot

We learned all about Shavuos. Starting off with Hashem looking for a mountain to give the Torah on. Hashem chose Mt. Sinai because she didn’t say that she’s the best and the prettiest and the biggest. She was humble and we can learn from her.

Then we learned how Hashem was looking for a nation to give the Torah to. Each nation wanted to know what was in the Torah and then said that they can’t follow it. When Hashem came to the Jewish people, we said na'aseh v'nishma, we want the Torah and we will keep it, now please tell us what is written inside.

The angels complained that the Torah should stay in heaven, but Hashem said that they are not people and cannot keep the mitzvos.

Hashem wanted a guarantor that the Torah will be kept. The Jewish people suggested the heaven and earth. Hashem said no, because they may not exist forever. Hashem didn’t agree to the forefathers either. Finally the Jewish people said that the children will be the guarantors. They will make sure that their children keep the Torah and they will teach it to their children and it will stay with us forever. Hashem liked that, so each one of us has a responsibility to make sure that we keep the Torah and mitzvot.

On Shavuos we decorate our house with flowers to remember how Hashem beautified Har Sinai with flowers.

We also learned that on Shavuos we eat dairy foods. The Torah is compared to milk and after the Jewish people received the Torah, they didn’t have any kosher dishes, so they ate dairy foods.

Shavuot activities and crafts

DAIRY PLACEMATS

We made our own dairy placemat with our favorite dairy foods. CLICK HERE to download our placemats available in Hebrew, Yiddish and English.

MILK A COW

We learned that milk comes from a cow. We got to milk our pretend cow that came to visit our class. Boy was it fun! We created a cow and filled a rubber glove with water as the udder. The kids milked the cow and loved it!

MILK EXPERIMENT

You need milk, food coloring, q-tips and dish-washing soap.

Pour the milk in a plate and put in a drop of each color of the food coloring.

Dip the q-tip into the soap and place it in the center of the plate. Watch the colors swirl together!

ICE CREAM STORE

We set up an ice cream store in our classroom! We named it “Yeshivishe Ice Cream Store” and you must come visit. They have music playing all day long “Come and make a bracha...” even when we go outside, this ice cream store has a truck as well... :)

We made special ice cream playdough in 3 flavors - vanilla, chocolate and strawberry - for
our store and it looks and smells like the real thing! We have a menu and even pretty
lampshades.

WRITE YOUR OWN DAIRY COOKBOOK

We also wrote our very own dairy cookbook and can’t wait to share our homemade recipes with you!

FLOWER CRAFT

We made our own flowers using cupcake liners and all different materials.

FLOWER SORTING ACTIVITY

I covered paper towel rolls with different colored construction paper. I purchased different flowers from dollar tree. The kids had to sort the flowers into the correct "vase".

ICE CREAM COUNTING GAME

I numbered the cones with different numbers. Then made different scoops of ice cream with different amounts of toppings. Sprinkles, chocolate chips etc. The kids had to match the scoop to the correct cone.

MITZVAH NOTE TORAH

We made our own Torahs out of our mitzvah notes! We decorated a cover for it and can’t wait to bring them home. We glued our mitzvah notes from throughout the year onto pages. We attached sticks from the wire hangars. The cover we created from felt and decorated it.

EDIBLE HAR SINAI CUPCAKE

We baked cupcakes together. Then we dipped it in green frosting. Decorated with flower sprinkles and stuck in 2 wafers as the luchos.

TORAH MATH GAME

We played a Torah math game, we had to count the alef bet letters on each Torah and stamp the correct number on it. Then we erased it and passed it onto the next student.

FIELD TRIP

We visited the Jewish Children’s Museum for a Sefer Torah Workshop. We got to see
how a Torah is made starting from the animal skin. We were able to feel skin from different animals.
We were able to use a quill and write on parchment. We then went upstairs and experienced
matan torah on the Yom Tov floor. We also had a great time dancing with the Torahs.

Shavuot books:

Shavuot Songs

I am a mountain

I am a mountain so very high,

I can reach way up to the sky

The Torah should be given on me –

‘cause I am as tall as can be, you see!

Oh! No! I am a mountain so very wide,

I can reach from side to side

The Torah should be given on me

Cuz I am as wide as can be you see.

But humble Har Sinai was so polite.

She knew it was wrong to brag or to fight

She stood by so kindly, filled with respect

It was humble Har Sinai that Hashem did select

Hashem gave us a present

Hashem gave us a present

Do you know what it was?

He gave us the Torah

so we can do mitzvos

He asked the other nations,

do you want this gift of mine?

But they said "No thank you,

for Torah we've no time"

Then to the B’nei Yisrael, Hashem did go

We said na'aseh v'nishma

Because we love Hashem so

Then to the B’nei Yisrael, Hashem did go

We said na'aseh v'nishma

Because we love Hashem so
