Shemini Parsha Summary

This week we learned about the dedication of the Mishkan. Aharon's sons Nadav and Avihu wanted to connect to Hashem so they brought ketoret. It wasn't authorized by Hashem so they were punished.
Aharon's other sons, Elazar and Isamar were kohanim and served in the Mishkan.

We learned that there are 2 signs for an animal to be kosher. They need to chew their cud and have split hooves. For fish to be kosher, they need fins and scales.
The Torah tells us which birds are not kosher. We know which ones are kosher according to tradition that is passed on. Insects are not kosher except a certain species of grasshopper.

Shemini Activities

  • We sorted kosher and non kosher animals.

When we say that food is kosher
Do you know what we mean?
We may eat only certain animals
That are tahor, which means clean

B’nei Yisroel all gathered to learn
    In the parsho of shemini
That we must eat only Kosher food
So to Hashem, holy we can be

All of the animals which we may eat
Must have split hooves on their feet
And they must chew their food over again
We know the animal is Kosher, then

Moshe taught us in great detail
That Kosher fish must have fins and scales
Most of the bugs or creatures that crawl
We may never eat at all!

THE KOSHER SONG- Uncle Moishy- Traditional- Volume 1

All the animals that I eat
must chew their cud and have split feet,
kosher meat just can’t be beat
    so I want only kosher.

So every time you’re in the market
only buy food with a kosher sign on it,
it’s good for me and it’s good for you
and wadda ya know?… Hashem loves it too!

Throw away your ham and bacon
    I won’t eat it; you’re mistaken,
    I’m a Jew and I’m not fakin’
    I want only kosher.

So every time you’re in the market
only buy food with a kosher sign on it,
it’s good for me and it’s good for you
and wadda ya know?… Hashem loves it too!

All the chocolate bars I eat
they taste real good and taste real sweet,
but I make sure to look and see
the sign that says it’s kosher.

So every time you’re in the market
only buy food with a kosher sign on it,
it’s good for me and it’s good for you
and Hashem, He loves it too!
