Vayakhel-Pekudei Parsha Summary

  • VAYAKHEL - We learned about how Moshe told the Jewish people to build the mishkan. The Jewish people brought so many donations, Moshe had to tell them to stop bringing. Hashem commanded the Jewish people to not build the mishkan on Shabbos even though the mishkan was such a holy place. We spoke about some of the 39 melachos (types of work) that we aren't allowed to do on shabbos.

  • PEKUDEI -We learned that the only thing left to make was to sew the bigdei kehunah - priestly garments. It was time to set up the mishkan. The beams kept falling down, until Moshe set them up. Moshe only had to touch them and they stood up on their own.

Parshas Vayakhel-Pekudei Activities

-We make light switch covers to remind us not to turn on/off the light.

Here are instructions for the dyed cotton balls: click here

-We wrote a book with our very own rhymes.

We adapted the book “Shabbos, Shabbos I Love You” (Hachai publishing) and made our very own rhymes (with a little guidance from the teacher) and illustrated a page in the book. We were very excited to bring it home!

Here are some examples we came up with:

  • Shabbos, Shabbos, I love you
I wear my special Shabbos shoe
  • At the Shabbos table I love to sing
Eat, candies, stuff that I make and everything!
  • I’m happy as can be
Cuz when Tatty goes to Shul, he goes with me!
  • Shabbos, Shabbos, I love you
Cuz going to Shul is the thing to do
  • Muktzah toys
    Are things that make noise
  • Shabbos, Shabbos, I love you
On Shabbos you don’t play with glue

Parshas Vayakhel-Pekudei Craft - Shabbat light switch covers

We made special covers for the light switch to use on Shabbos so that we don’t accidentally turn off/on the light. We used foam or felt and decorated it however the children wanted. They wrote the letters שבת on it and we sent it home with velcro attached.

Materials needed:
  • small foam rectangles or felt
  • various decorating materials (sequins, foam shapes etc.)
  • markers, glitter glue or paint
  • velcro for the back
Write out the letters שבת and have the kids write it on their own. Then they can decorate it as they wish. Add velcro to the back so they can stick it on their light switch at home.

Parsha Songs

B’nei Yisroel gathered and they heard
Moshe told them Hashem’s word
In six days all work you must do
Shabbos is special for every Jew

Even work for the mishkan
On Shabbos kodesh must not be done
This job was done by Betzalel
Gifts were brought by B’nei Yisroel

They brought more than was needed
For the mishkan to be completed
It’s purpose was fulfilled
Now it was as Hashem willed

When on the mishkan the cloud appeared
The people knew Hashem was near
When the cloud lifted they could see
They should continue on their journey
