This week we delved into learning about the Amazon Rainforest. There are so many animals and plants in the rainforest and we took our time reading lots and lots of books and learning the names of many of them. We learned about the 4 levels of the rainforest. And finished off by creating a diorama of the rainforest.

We saw 2 videos linked below of the beautiful Iguazu falls.

We learned a few words in Portuguese. We've been using the word obrigado in our house, which means thank you.

FOOD:

  • I made Galinhada - a Brazilian chicken and rice one pot dish. Here is one version and here is another.

  • I made Brigadeiro (Brazilian fudge balls) and let me tell you, those are decadent! They are incredible. I didn't have sweetened condensed milk, so I followed this recipe to make my own. (Note: I had to cook it for a lot longer than stated before it cooked down to half the original volume.)

  • We made PÃO DE QUEIJO - Brazilian Cheese Bread
It took me a while to find Tapioca flour, but these were really cheesy and every

ART:

My kids drew an Anteater following this video.

Here is our Amazon Rainforest diorama.
We used rocks and marbles from Dollar Tree to create grass and the river. We made trees with toilet paper rolls and tissue paper. I bought moss that we put around. We used plastic animals that we had that are found in the rainforest. My kids drew animals and cut them out and we placed those. We had some plush sloths that we hung upside down from the trees. I tied string across the trees and we placed hanging monkeys on them. This took us a while to create, but we are very proud of how it turned out!

Here are some rainforest items:
